The mission

The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) implements the UK government’s maritime safety policy and works to prevent the loss of life and reduce pollution on the coast and at sea. In 2016, the MCA launched a significant strategic change programme, to address the recommendations of the Maritime Growth Study. A key element of the programme was leadership development for management staff, from technical and business managers to assistant directors with overall strategic responsibility. Firefly was appointed leadership development partner for this transformation and for support with ongoing cultural change.

What we delivered

  • Phase 1: design and delivery of core leadership development modules for 30 senior leaders in the Survey & Inspection team. These modules were shared with the MCA team for delivery to future cohorts.

  • Phase 2: Implementation of “Everything DiSC” certification programme for 12 internal trainers. This enabled the MCA to roll out DiSC throughout the organisation, providing a valuable toolkit for improving collaboration, increasing self-awareness and  generating stronger working relationships. The MCA credits  this as a core part of their cultural transformation.

  • Phase 3: We continue to partner with the MCA as the organisation moves forward in its transformation, supporting them in the identification of further opportunities for growth that align with their ethos and ongoing development strategy.

The impact

Our work with MCA was extremely effective in supporting cultural transformation within the organisation and implementation of a revised corporate strategy. In addition, participants benefited from:

  • Increased leadership skills and capabilities.

  • Improvements to interpersonal working style, resulting in more effective collaboration and interdisciplinary alliances.

  • A deeper understanding of the effects of personality on working relationships.

Insights

Our work with the MCA clearly demonstrated that when implemented at scale - and in collaboration with the right partners - strategic change programmes can truly transform an organisation.

Kirsty’s considerable experience and unusual ability to listen deeply to the challenges unique to the operation meant she was able to design an approach to behavioural change that made impact quickly and was sustainable over the longer term. Kirsty’s complete commitment to successful outcomes made for a true  partnership approach that is not mere rhetoric.
