Change is constant, but that doesn’t make it easy, especially when you’re the one leading it. Good change leadership goes beyond plans and processes; it’s about guiding people through the emotional side of change with clarity, confidence and care. At Firefly, we believe it’s one of the most essential leadership skills - and one you can learn, develop and practise.

If there’s one thing we can count on in modern organisations, it’s change. New systems, new structures, new technology … often happening simultaneously. But while change may be constant, that doesn’t make it easy. And leading through it? That’s something else entirely.

That’s where good change leadership comes in. It’s not just about managing a project plan or rolling out communications. It’s about guiding people through the emotional and behavioural shifts that change brings with clarity, confidence and care.

At Firefly, we believe that change leadership isn’t just a helpful skill, it’s one of the the most important leadership skills, and it’s one that can be learned, developed and practised.

Change vs transition: why the difference matters.

One of the most important things leaders can understand is the difference between change and transition. Change is the external event - the new software, the restructuring, the policy shift. Transition is what happens internally - how people make sense of that change, adjust their mindset, and adapt their behaviour.

The truth is, change can often happen quickly. But transition takes time. And if leaders don’t acknowledge that, it can result in confusion, disengagement or resistance - not because people don’t care, but because they haven’t had the space or support to adjust.

Getting curious about resistance.

Resistance is one of the biggest challenges leaders face during change. But here’s the thing: resistance isn’t always a bad thing. It often means people care - they’re just unsure, overwhelmed or afraid.

Rather than pushing back harder, effective leaders get curious during change management. What’s driving this reaction? What might the person be worried about? What might they need in order to feel safe, seen, or supported?

When we take the time to understand the why behind resistance, we’re more likely to unlock collaboration than conflict.

Change starts with you.

It’s easy to think that leading change is about what you do for others. But in reality, it starts with you. Great change leaders are deeply self-aware. They understand their own behavioural patterns, pressure points and habits and know how to pause, reflect and choose different responses when needed.

When we lead from a place of intention (not reactivity), we show up with more integrity, consistency, and capacity to support others through uncertainty.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present and being willing to do the inner work as much as the outer work.

Fuel first, then lead.

Leading change is demanding. It’s emotional. It can stretch us in ways we didn’t expect. And without the right resourcing, it’s easy to burn out.

That’s why it’s critical for leaders to know what fuels them, and what drains them.

Whether it’s time to think, a walk outside, or a conversation with someone who gets it, we need to intentionally create space for what restores us. And we need to help our teams do the same.

You can’t create capacity in a team if you’re running on empty yourself.

There’s no one-size-fits-all.

There’s no single blueprint for being a good change leader. But there are a few essential markers:

  • Self-awareness - knowing your triggers, strengths and blind spots

  • Relational understanding - being able to have courageous conversations and build trust

  • Clear communication - being intentional about what you say, when you say it, and what impact it has

The best leaders bring these skills together in a way that reflects their values, plays to their strengths, and connects authentically to others.

Change leadership isn’t about ticking boxes - it’s about showing up with heart and clarity in a complex, fast-moving world.
