Not all learning works the same way, because not all learners are the same. In this insight we'll explore how to find your learning style, why it matters in organisations and teams, and how we build content to support all kinds of learning for leadership and personal development.

Have you ever sat through a training session either online or in-person and thought, “This just isn’t landing for me?” It’s not that the content was bad; it’s just that it wasn’t delivered in a way that worked for you.
That’s learning styles in action.
And one of our primary objectives when mapping out the key features of the Firefly Online Learning Library in 2024 was to try and include as many versions of individual learning styles as possible.
Different learning styles.
We all process and retain information differently. Some of us like to try things out straight away. Others want to understand the theory behind it first. Some people need to reflect and make sense of things over time. Others learn by doing, watching, listening, or a mix of all three.
The challenge is that most learning environments still deliver just one approach. But in real life (and especially in organisations and teams), learning isn’t linear. It’s not just about sitting back and absorbing. It’s about taking some in, making sense of it in your own way, and putting it into practice.
How do you find your learning style?
Start by thinking about what helps something stick for you. Do you:
Learn best by doing - even if you get it wrong the first time?
Need space to reflect and connect the dots before you take action?
Prefer to read, highlight, or make notes in the margins?
Like to listen - maybe while you walk, drive or take a screen break?
Want to understand the why behind something before the how?
Feel clearer after a conversation or group discussion?
There’s no “right” answer, and most of us will use a blend of styles depending on the situation. But knowing what works for you can help you get more from any learning experience.
And if you’re supporting others to learn, it’s a useful reminder that not everyone will engage with content in the same way.
Learning styles and the Firefly Online Learning Library.
Which is why, when we developed our Online Learning Library, we built it around different learning styles. This meant:
Video content for people who like to see and hear ideas come to life
Audio versions to listen to
Written transcripts for those who prefer to read (these can also be printed out to write notes on and highlight important information)
Workbooks to apply the learning
Signposted resources to dive deeper and explore a topic from a new angle
Monthly group coaching calls to ask questions, reflect and take action
Whether you prefer to do, read, listen or watch - there’s something for everyone.
This idea sits at the heart of the Firefly Online Learning Library. In fact, this blog was inspired by one of the bonus videos inside the library.
So if you’re curious to explore your learning style in practice (and pick up valuable tools for leadership, team effectiveness and personal growth along the way), why not try it out?
